Week 4: Post 1-Virtual or Real Communication?

It is interesting to think in the few most recent years it doesn’t really matter if we met in person or via email, text message, or email for it to be productive. I believe that doing things online with my other group members is still considered real. This summer I am in 2 different online classes in my comm41 class we have to do group projects and the teacher mentioned we have to meet in person or schedule a designated time online to meet, whether it is a discussion board, chat room or IMing session. We ended up doing fairly well on the project so I do not see why it would not be considered a real meeting session. What do you guys think? Do you consider interaction online real or fake?

  1. You are very brave to take two online classes! I wrote about this topic as well. I think that online communication is very much real and is definitely not fake. Although it isn’t in person contact, we are still communicating our thoughts/concerns. It’s interesting to me that people think that just because you aren’t physically meeting with someone means that that’s not real communication. What makes it fake? You’re saying real things so how is that not real communication.

  2. Hi Miss Potato,

I took Comm 41 this past spring semester. It seems intimidating at first to meet virtually with your group if you choose to do it that way, or else you can meet face to face. Meeting virtually (ie in a chat room) is the same thing as meeting as person in my opinion because it requires the same things - taking turns when talking, meeting at a pre-determined time, etc. So I do not think that online interaction is "fake".

I think that we are very lucky to be able to meet online for discussions and classes. I LOVE taking online classes. I only have about 4 Comm classes and I'm happy to say that I haven't taken an in person Comm class yet! Everything I have taken has been online. I wish there were more online classes because they offer greater flexibility and make it easier for me to work full time!

  3. I admire your bluntness, and the way your expressed yourself. I hope many people will also be inspired to do the same.
